Sandro Botticelli · c. 1485
An exhibition interpretation of Botticelli’s Birth of Venus, c. 1485, tempera on canvas, Uffizi Galleries. Explore ten details in the original painting.
She is not being born; she is coming ashore
Tempera on canvas, painted in Florence around 1485. The first record is Vasari's, in 1550: he saw it at the Medici villa at Castello, hanging with the Primavera. It was probably commissioned by a member of the Medici family; the particular patron is uncertain. A Tuscan canvas this size was rare then: the Primavera is on panel, this is on cloth — light, inexpensive, and suited to a villa rather than a church.
The title says birth; the picture shows the landing. In Hesiod she is born of the sea-foam (aphros — the foam is in her name) and drifts ashore on a shell. On the left the west wind Zephyr, holding a figure possibly identified as Aura, blows her in; on the right the Hour of Spring waits with a cloak embroidered with cornflowers. Roses fall in the wind — the poet Poliziano wrote that the roses were born with her.
Her pose is antique — the Venus Pudica, one hand over the breast and one over the lap, the pose of the Roman marbles. But her body is one no marble ever had: the neck too long, the left shoulder falling too steeply, the left arm impossibly long. Botticelli knew; he wanted the line, not the anatomy. The nearly life-size goddess embodies a Renaissance reimagining of classical figures.
There is no glass here and no rope two metres out. Walk inside the giant shell as wind lifts white sand into the light; at the closest stop press ↑ again to explore the gold in her hair.
Look here
Her eyes do not meet yours; they look past you to the left, as if just woken. Legend makes the model Simonetta Vespucci, the acknowledged beauty of Florence, dead of consumption at twenty-two in 1476 — almost ten years before the picture. There is no proof, but this face returns in Botticelli again and again. Zoom to the eyes: the lashes are painted one by one.
Every strand the wind lifts carries a thread of gold — the Uffizi confirms that the hair’s luminous highlights are gilded. It is elsewhere too: the ribs of the shell, the edges of the leaves, the flowers on the cloak. By candle and window light it flashed; on a screen you can only see that it is brighter than what is round it. Follow one lock: the gold line rides on top of the darker hair.
From the chin to the collarbone to that hand — the length of the neck, the slope of the left shoulder, the length of the left arm: none of it is anatomy. Leonardo was dissecting corpses in these same years; Botticelli did not care. He wanted one unbroken curve from the crown of her head to her heel. Compare: her left arm, shoulder to wrist, is a hand longer than her right.
Two figures fly entwined: the one with puffed cheeks is Zephyr, the west wind; the one he holds is usually taken for Aura, the breeze (some say Chloris, the nymph of flowers). Their wings are dark; a grey-blue cloth wraps them. His wind is painted — pale lines streaming from his mouth. Look at his mouth: the wind comes from there.
Dozens of pale pink roses drift across the left half, each with a gold heart. In Poliziano's Stanze the shell is blown toward the shore and roses fall from the sky. They are not decoration; they are the text. The heart is gold; each petal has a white rim.
The figure receiving her is the Hour of Spring. Her white dress is embroidered with cornflowers, a wreath of myrtle (Venus's plant) circles her neck, a belt of roses her waist. The red cloak she holds out is scattered with daisies and primroses — all flowers of spring. Her feet, too, do not quite touch the ground. Count the cornflowers on the dress — each is painted on its own.
A scallop, far larger than life, its ribs lined in gold. She stands at the hinge end; foam breaks along the rim — the one place in the picture where the sea touches anything. The shell this hall is built round was made after it. Look under her feet: the toes do not really rest on the shell.
The sea is not painted so much as written: rows of small white V-strokes, denser and fainter with distance. The surface is flat, with none of the foreshortening a real sea would show — this is a picture that wants to be a relief or a tapestry, not a window. Near Vs are big, far Vs are small — that is the whole perspective.
In the bottom left corner a few cattails grow out of the water, their brown heads intact. They tell you this is not the open sea but the shallows by the shore. Botticelli's plants are exact — in the Primavera botanists have named over a hundred and ninety species. The fuzz on each cattail head is drawn hair by hair.
The trees on the right are orange trees, dark-leaved, the leaves edged with gold. The Uffizi links the historical name mala medica to an echo of the Medici name, making the orange tree a possible family emblem; the Primavera is set in an orange grove too. The shore the goddess lands on is a Medici garden. Gold along the leaf edges; slanting white highlights on the trunks.
