Leonardo da Vinci · c. 1503–1506
View Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa in high resolution, free and without the crowd: one hall, one work, in a concrete pavilion open to the sea. Zoom in close enough to see the brushstrokes, the craquelure and the sfumato that dissolves her smile — closer than the Louvre's rope will ever let you stand.
Who she is, and why it is her
Lisa Gherardini, wife of the Florentine silk merchant Francesco del Giocondo. In October 1503 a Florentine clerk, Agostino Vespucci, wrote in the margin of a volume of Cicero that Leonardo was at work on the head of Lisa del Giocondo. The note was only recognised for what it is in 2005, in the Heidelberg university library — it remains the hardest evidence we have of who she is.
Leonardo never delivered it to the man who commissioned it. He carried it to Milan, to Rome, and finally over the Alps into France, working on it on and off for some sixteen years, until he died there in 1519. It has never gone back to Italy.
Nor was she always famous. Around 1800 Napoleon hung her in his own bedroom in the Tuileries and kept her there four years. The real turn came on 21 August 1911, when a Louvre workman, Vincenzo Peruggia, lifted her off the wall and walked out with her under his coat. For two years people queued to see the empty wall — to look at a blank space. When she came back the queues were longer. Picasso was questioned. It is fair to say the theft is what made her the most famous painting in the world.
Today she hangs behind bulletproof glass, the crowd held four and a half metres back, each visitor reportedly getting about fifty seconds. This room has no glass, no queue and no fifty seconds. Walk up. Keep going until you can see the crack the wood opened by itself.

She is painted on a poplar panel, not canvas. Wood moves with humidity, and by the early 1900s a crack had opened from the top edge down to her hairline. Restorers set two walnut butterfly braces into the back to hold it; the upper one went missing sometime between 1888 and 1905 — possibly during the two years she was stolen. Follow it down from the top edge — it disappears into her hair.
A gauze veil lies over her hair: a fine edge drawn along the crown, falling to her shoulders. From four metres it does not exist. Zoom in and it appears — the hair beneath it is painted through it. The outermost thin line over her skull is not the edge of her hair.
- 她没有眉毛 · She has no eyebrows 这幅画被问得最多的问题。 The most-asked question about this painting. Two answers coexist: Renaissance Florence had a fashion for plucked brows and a high forehead; and in 2007 Pascal Cotte, scanning the panel in thirteen wavelengths, found in the data the ghost of a single left brow and traces of lashes — they may have been painted, and scrubbed away by later cleaning. Zoom to the brow ridge: what you see is skin, not a covered-over mark.
In 2000 the Harvard neuroscientist Margaret Livingstone published an explanation in Science: the smile lives almost entirely in low spatial frequencies, which your peripheral vision reads better than your fovea does. Look at her eyes and the shadows at the corners of her mouth assemble into a smile; look straight at her mouth and it withdraws. Try it: hold her eyes, then move to the corner of her mouth.
Zoom into her chest and a fine net appears. Five centuries of paint and panel shrinking at different rates drew every one of those lines; none of them are Leonardo's. It is not damage. It is the painting's age made visible — and the plainest proof that you are looking at a physical object. Clearest where the paint is lightest — her chest and forehead.
In the valley behind her left shoulder a small arched bridge crosses the water, painted in a few strokes. Scholars have argued for decades over which Italian bridge it is — Buriano near Arezzo and the Romito bridge at Laterina have both been claimed. Nobody has settled it. Find the pale line running across the water — that is the roadway; then look at the dark openings beneath its left end.
Track across her shoulders from right to left: the water and the hills do not meet at the same height. Leonardo stitched two landscapes, seen from two vantage points, to either side of her. Some argue this is why she seems to be turning — your eye crosses between two worlds and never finds one horizon to stand on. Fix the waterline on the right, then travel straight across to the left.
On the left a red-earth road winds down out of the hills and simply stops behind her shoulder — like the water on the right, it connects to nothing. This landscape is not anywhere. Leonardo assembled it. Follow the road down and watch her shoulder swallow it.
