Leonardo da Vinci · 1495–1498

View Leonardo da Vinci's Last Supper in high resolution, free and without the fifteen-minute slot: one candle-lit refectory, one mural, a 600-megapixel scan you can zoom into until the plaster's craquelure fills the screen.

Five hundred years of one wall

Around 1495 Ludovico Sforza, Duke of Milan, had Leonardo paint this scene on the end wall of the refectory of Santa Maria delle Grazie. The friars ate their meals beneath it: the painted table continues their tables, the painted ceiling continues their vault, and the light in the picture falls from the left — the side of the room's real windows. It was not a painting hung on a wall. It was the room, extended.

The novelist Matteo Bandello, a boy in the convent at the time, watched him work: some days from first light to dark without eating; other days he would walk in, stare at the wall for two or three hours, and leave without touching it. To be able to work like that, Leonardo abandoned true fresco — which must be finished a patch a day into wet plaster — and painted in tempera and oil onto dry plaster, as if on a panel. The decision destroyed it.

It began to flake within twenty years. By 1556 Vasari found it "nothing but a muddle of blots". In 1652 the friars cut a doorway through the middle of it to reach the kitchen, and Christ's feet were gone. In 1796 Napoleon's troops used the refectory as a stable. In August 1943 an Allied bomb took off the refectory's roof and one whole side wall; this wall stood in the open air for years, held up by sandbags and scaffolding.

From 1978 to 1999 the restorer Pinin Brambilla Barcilon spent twenty-one years under a microscope lifting off the repaintings of earlier centuries. What she uncovered is what you are looking at: not much of Leonardo's own hand survives, and the rest is bare plaster and five hundred years of marks. In Milan today you see it in a group, for fifteen minutes. This room has no clock.

Look here

Every line of the perspective — the coffers of the ceiling, the tops of the tapestries, the edge of the table — converges on one point at Christ's right temple. Leonardo drove a nail there and ran strings out from it to lay the lines true. The nail is gone; the hole is still in the plaster. At full zoom, find the small dark pit beside his right temple, at the hairline; then follow any ceiling line back — it points there.
Christ has just said "one of you will betray me". He alone is still: his right hand reaches down toward a dish on the table, his left lies palm up. In the Gospel he goes on — the one who "dips his hand with me in the dish" — and Judas's hand is reaching for that same dish. The same two hands also point to the wine and the bread: the meal's other meaning. Follow his right hand to the left and find the nearest dish — the one a second hand is reaching for.
The face almost hidden beside Christ's right shoulder is Thomas — a profile and this one raised forefinger. It is the finger that will later go into the wound in the risen Christ's side: "unless I put my finger into the mark of the nails, I will not believe". Leonardo reduced the whole man to that gesture. The finger stands against the dark of the window jamb; the cracks across the fingertip are the plaster's, not paint.
On Christ's left, arms thrown open as if shoved backward, is James the Greater. His three — Thomas, James, Philip — are the group nearest Christ and the most violently moved. Leonardo's red-chalk study for this head survives in the Royal Collection at Windsor, with a castle tower sketched in the corner of the same sheet. Look at his mouth, slightly open — with Thomas's finger and Philip's hands, three men saying "impossible" three ways.
The young man rising behind James, in pink, both hands pressed to his chest and head bent toward Christ, is Philip. The Gospel has the disciples ask one after another "Lord, is it I?" — Leonardo gave the line to him. He and John are the only two beardless faces at the table. Follow his eyes down: on the right half of the table he is the only one looking at Christ.
  6. 手指着基督、脸转向别处的马太 · Matthew, pointing one way and looking the other 右边这一组是马太、达太和西门。 The right-hand group is Matthew, Thaddeus and Simon. Matthew, in blue, throws both arms toward Christ while his face turns the other way, to Simon at the end of the table — "did you hear that?". Furthest away, hearing least, they gesture most: Leonardo lets the words travel outward like a wave. His face and his hands point in opposite directions.
  7. 达太的手背 · Thaddeus, the back of a hand 马太和西门之间灰发白须的老人是达太。 Between Matthew and Simon, the old man with grey hair and a white beard is Thaddeus. He is not looking at Christ; he has turned to Simon, one hand flipped back-up, the other laid flat on the table — "what do you make of that?". Some have taken the face for Leonardo's own: fifty or so, long-bearded, brow knitted. There is no evidence for it, and no way to rule it out. Look at the turned hand: back up, fingers half curled.
  8. 桌尾的西门 · Simon, at the end of the table 最右边一身白袍、秃顶、只露侧脸的是西门,十二人里最老的一个。 At the far right, in white, bald, seen in profile, is Simon, the oldest of the twelve. His hands are open toward Thaddeus, palms up — "how should I know". He is the last man the words reach, and the only one who has not turned even slightly toward Christ; from him, everything has to travel back. Look at his two hands, open to either side — the mirror image of Andrew's raised pair.
Before this, painters set Judas alone on the far side of the table. Leonardo put him among the others and did one thing: everyone else leans forward, into the light; he alone pulls back, his face sinking into shadow. Bandello says Leonardo searched the streets of Milan for more than a year for this face, and threatened the prior, who kept hurrying him, that he would use the prior's. Look at the light on the face — he is the only one whose face is darker than his neck.
  10. 钱袋,和翻倒的盐 · The purse, and the spilled salt 犹大右手攥着一只小袋,里面是三十块银币。 Judas's right hand grips a small bag: thirty pieces of silver. By his elbow lies a small overturned vessel, read for centuries as a spilled salt-cellar — spilled salt being an old omen of betrayal. The reading is popular, but the object is badly worn, and some see only an ordinary little bowl. Find the clenched hand and the clay-coloured bag first, then look down and right for the small vessel on its side.
Behind Judas a hand holds a knife, turned backward at the hip. The angle is so awkward that for centuries people claimed it belonged to no one — a spare hand. It is Peter's: knife in his right hand, left hand on John's shoulder, and a few hours later, in Gethsemane, he will cut off a servant's ear with it. Trace the blade up to the wrist and on to the sleeve — the same blue sleeve rests on John's shoulder.
On Christ's left, eyes closed, leaning toward Peter, is John, the youngest of the twelve. Convention painted him beardless and soft-featured — soft enough that a famous novel took him for Mary Magdalene. It is only convention: the Renaissance John always looks like this. Look at the gap between him and Peter: the two heads nearly touch, and neither face is turned to Christ.
The old man to Judas's left with both palms raised outward is Andrew — "not me". In this left-hand group nobody moves their body; only the hands speak. Count the fingers: all ten spread — the clearest pair of hands in the painting.
Behind Andrew, the long-haired young man is James the Less. He does not move himself; he only stretches one long arm past Andrew to Peter's shoulder — tapping Peter across two other men, as if to say "you ask". That arm is the thread stitching the three left-hand groups together. Follow the arm from his shoulder to the right and see whose shoulder it lands on.
The figure at the far left is Bartholomew, who has stood straight up at the words, both hands on the table. Look at his face and clothes: the colour is missing in patches, the plaster showing through. The 1999 restoration stopped faking the losses as original paint and filled them only with pale watercolour — so every blurred passage you see on this wall is an honest blank. Look at the mottling on his green cloak: the dark is Leonardo's, the pale is nothing.
In front of Christ, a shallow dish, a few loaves, and glasses so thin the cloth shows through them. After the 1999 restoration someone identified the food on the plates as grilled eel with orange slices — a fifteenth-century Milanese dish, not a Jerusalem one. The cloth's pattern and creases are Milanese too: the friars ate off the same cloth every day. Look at a glass: the cloth's pattern shows through the body of it.
The blue bands and little flowers on the cloth mark it as "Perugia cloth" — blue-patterned Umbrian linen, everyday tableware in fifteenth-century Italy. The creases are painted too, across and down: it has just been taken from a chest and spread. The friars' own tables were laid with the same. Look for the creases — faint straight lines dividing the cloth into squares.
Below the cloth, the disciples' feet and the table's legs show — a convent trestle table, not a biblical couch. This is one of the darkest, most eroded stretches of the wall, but the feet are still there: the doorway took only the pair in the middle. Find the foot with its toes turned outward, beside a slanting table leg.
Through the three windows, the hills and lakes of Lombardy; the brightest patch of sky falls exactly behind Christ's head. Leonardo painted no halo — the daylight stands in for it, and the curved pediment over the window sits above his head like one. Look at the sky: the blue survives only in flecks; the white is bare plaster.
Every line of the coffered ceiling runs to Christ's temple — a point four and a half metres above the refectory floor. The painted room, in other words, is seen by an eye hanging in mid-air; nobody standing on the floor can ever line up with its perspective. Leonardo knew. He was not after a room you could walk into, but one that reads true from anywhere in the hall. Pull back until the whole ceiling shows, then follow any beam down — they all end at the same man.
Four red "millefleurs" tapestries hang on each side wall — the flower-strewn Flemish weavings of the fifteenth century, furniture of the Sforza court. They narrow and crowd toward the back: the perspective measuring the room's depth for you. The red is one of the few colours left; the pattern survives only as a ghost. Look at the first one's top right corner: a slice is cut off on a diagonal — perspective, not damage.
The painted room stops here: an egg-and-dart cornice with a garland of fruit and leaves resting on it. The garland is the bottom of the three lunettes — in the real arches above the picture Leonardo painted the Sforza coats of arms, ringed with fruit. This scan ends at the garland; the arms are not in it. Travel along the cornice and watch each "egg" of the moulding flatten with the perspective.
The arch at the bottom centre is the head of a doorway, cut through the painting in 1652 so the friars could reach the kitchen. It took the lower edge of the cloth and Christ's feet. What the feet looked like survives only in early copies: in the near full-size one at the Royal Academy in London they are crossed, one over the other — a foreshadowing of the nails. The door was later walled up; the hole stayed. Look at the hem of the cloth above the arch: it simply stops.
