Fra Angelico · c. 1425–1426

The Annunciation by Fra Angelico, c. 1425–1426, tempera on poplar panel, 190.3 × 191.5 cm, Museo del Prado, Madrid.

A ray of light crosses the loggia

Fra Angelico painted this altarpiece for the Dominican convent of San Domenico in Fiesole around 1425–1426. Tempera on poplar, 190.3 by 191.5 cm in the Prado’s record, it survives with its own gilded frame and the five small scenes of its predella. It left the convent in 1611, passed to Madrid’s Descalzas Reales, and entered the Prado in 1861.

The picture is itself a loggia: slender columns, Corinthian capitals, blue groin vaults sown with gold stars, an iron tie rod across the arches. Gabriel bows; Mary sits on a wooden bench with her arms crossed and the book still open on her knee. The loggia you stand in continues hers: the same columns, the same starred sky, the same garden on the left.

From the upper left the hands of God send a golden ray, with the dove of the Holy Spirit inside it, straight to Mary. Through the garden it crosses, Adam and Eve are being driven out of Paradise: the Fall and the Redemption share one picture, which is the point of it.

A restoration completed at the Prado in 2019 removed old grime and later overpaint, recovering the lapis blue, the red draperies and the original curve of the angel’s wing. Open the guide to follow eight details, from the Ave Maria on the frame to the small swallow perched on the tie rod.

Look here

In the gold disc at the upper left are the hands of God; a beam drawn in gold lines slants across the whole picture from here. Inside it flies a white dove, the Holy Spirit, heading for Mary. Follow the gold lines down and right and find the dove inside the beam.
Adam and Eve, wrapped in skins and barefoot, cross the flowering meadow with an angel urging them on from behind. They leave by the left of the picture; the redemption happens on the right. Look at the meadow underfoot: every flower is drawn.
In the roundel between the two arches is the head of God the Father, painted in grey monochrome like a carved relief. It is the same source as the hands sending the ray at the upper left. Compare this fictive relief with the painted capitals on either side.
  4. 横梁上的燕子 · The swallow on the tie rod 中央柱头上方的铁拉杆上停着一只燕子,黑背白腹。 A swallow, dark-backed and white-bellied, perches on the iron tie rod above the central capital. The swallow returns in spring, a traditional sign of rebirth; it is also the only figure in the picture looking at no one. Zoom until you can see its beak and forked tail.
Gabriel’s wings are not painted but tooled: gold leaf laid first, then every feather incised into it, so they flicker in real light. The 2019 restoration recovered the original curve of the forward wing. Look at the fine incised lines along each feather and the wear in the leaf.
Mary crosses her hands on her chest, the gesture of acceptance; the book lies open on her knee, just interrupted. Her mantle is lapis lazuli, the costliest pigment in the picture. Find the gold hem and the writing on the open pages.
Behind Mary is a narrow bedroom: a wooden bench and a small barred window. Angelico sets the sacred meeting inside the plainest of houses. See the light from the little window falling on the bench.
  8. 画框上的圣母颂 · The Ave Maria on the frame 主画面与底座之间的横条上,用金字写着 AVE MARIA GRATIA PLENA DOMINUS TECUM…——天使对玛利亚说的第一句话,字间以金色花饰隔开。 On the rail between the main panel and the predella, in gold letters: AVE MARIA GRATIA PLENA DOMINUS TECUM… — the angel’s first words to Mary, the words separated by gilded ornaments. BENEDICTA TU。 Read along the rail and find BENEDICTA TU.
The five small panels tell Mary’s life: her birth and marriage, the Visitation, the Adoration of the Magi, the Presentation in the Temple, and this one, the Dormition, with Christ at the bed receiving her soul. Look at the apostles round the bed; no two faces are alike.
