Hans Holbein the Younger · 1533

Hans Holbein the Younger painted The Ambassadors in 1533. This chamber offers frontal deep viewing and a continuous walk to the oblique viewpoint that reveals its anamorphic skull.

Two ambassadors, and a world out of tune

In 1533 Jean de Dinteville, the French ambassador in England, commissioned Holbein to paint him with his friend Georges de Selve. One wears pink satin and lynx fur, the other a restrained dark robe. Between them sits an entire apparatus of time, astronomy, music, mathematics and geography.

The knowledge does not add up to a settled world. A lute string is broken, one flute is missing, and the arithmetic book lies open at division. In the year this was painted, Henry VIII’s break with Rome was close. Division here is mathematical, political and religious.

The most conspicuous object cannot be read from the front. The pale slash between the men’s feet resolves into a skull only from low at the painting’s right; a small silver crucifix is also concealed behind the curtain at upper left. Death and redemption wait at the edge of knowledge and power for the viewer to move.

At upper left the green curtain is pulled back just enough to reveal part of a silver crucifix. The National Gallery reads it beside the skull below: mortality is paired with the possibility of resurrection and salvation. Follow the upper-left edge and find the small cold-white form.
  2. 帽子上还有一颗骷髅 · There is another skull on his hat 让·德·丹特维尔的黑帽上别着一枚很小的骷髅章。 A tiny skull badge is pinned to Jean de Dinteville’s black cap. It answers the huge distorted skull below: mortality is not only hidden in the viewer’s angle; it has already entered the portrait with the ambassador. Follow the black brim until a tiny skull face appears.
  3. 他们把年龄写在身上 · They wear their ages in the picture 乔治·德·塞尔夫手肘下的书写着 AETATIS SVAE 25,意思是“时年二十五岁”;让·德·丹特维尔的匕首鞘上则写着 AET. SVAE 29。 The book beneath Georges de Selve’s elbow reads AETATIS SVAE 25 — aged twenty-five. Jean de Dinteville’s dagger sheath answers with AET. SVAE 29. They pose with the gravity of established statesmen, yet neither man is thirty. 29。 Read 25 on the book’s fore-edge, then cross to 29 on the dagger sheath.
  4. 测量天空的桌面 · A table for measuring the heavens 上层摆着天球仪、多面日晷和测量天体位置的仪器。 The upper shelf holds a celestial globe, a polyhedral sundial and instruments for locating heavenly bodies. They advertise wealth, but also the two young men’s command of costly, advanced mathematics and astronomy. Look for the brass graduations and their fine cast shadows.
A set square props the arithmetic book open at a page about mathematical division. In 1533, with religion and diplomacy pulling apart, the choice is difficult to treat as accidental. The figures remain legible beneath the set square.
  6. 断弦与缺席的笛子 · A broken string and a missing flute 鲁特琴有一根弦断了,旁边的笛套又空了一个位置。 One string of the lute is broken, and the flute case beside it has an empty slot. Instruments made for harmony turn discord into something visible. Trace the fine strings over the lute, then find the empty pocket in the flute case.
The terrestrial globe is turned toward France and even names Polisy, where Jean de Dinteville had his château. The painting was probably taken there after his embassy and kept in the family’s great hall for more than a century. Search the part of France for the tiny name Polisy.
The diagonal form hovering over the floor is an anamorphic skull, the painting’s memento mori — remember that you must die. Zooming from the front only makes the distortion larger. Leave deep look and press →; from low at the painting’s right it resolves. First study the impossible pale slash, then physically change viewpoint.
